Head, Hands, and Heart

Anthony's mom, Aunty Anna, came to A6 to teach us to sew! The students used strips of paper with rows of holes and yarn to learn various stitches. The students amazed us with patterns that they came up with after learning the basics. Anna, a professional seamstress, will return with cloth on a follow-up visit to help further develop our skills. Thank you, or "bolshoe spasibo" in Russian, Aunty Anna!

Cycles in Nature

In science class we learned about the water cycle...
Ask your child to sing with you...
"Water Travels in a Cycle" (to the tune of "She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain"):
Water travels in a cycle, yes it does! (hand in circular motion)
Water travels in a cycle, yes it does! (hand in circular motion)
It goes up as evaporation, (fingers twinkling up to overhead)
forms clouds as condensation, (hands cupping a cloud overhead)
then falls down as precipitation, yes it does! (fingers twinkling down)

Now we are learning about plant life cycles.
For our Fall Family Fun Night art project, we worked together to create a pumpkin seed mosaic depicting the different stages of the life cycle of a pumpkin. It turned out great!

Next, we will learn about the animal life cycle, nutrient cycle, and decomposition cycle.
Plants are a big theme in second grade and we will be staring to plant in the school garden very soon. If you have any seeds, starts, organic fertilizer, garden tools, decorations, etc. please bring them in to donate. More to come about volunteering to help in the garden.

Aunty Josephine has been coming to teach yoga. We are building our strength, flexibility, concentration, focus, coordination, balance, cooperation, and more!

In Writing class, we told stories around a "campfire" about about our meaningful objects brought from home. Next week we will start to get our stories down on paper!
